Swasthani Brata
The festival of Swasthani Brata Katha honors the Shiva and Swasthani as their stories are told over the month (January/February) long festival in Nepali homes.
With the coming of the full moon of the Nepali month of Poush, the month-long festival of Shree Swasthani Brata Katha begins. The festival honors the goddess Swasthani who is known for granting wishes to only the pure in heart. During this time, men and women take baths in sacred rivers.
The prime spot for taking a holy bath in Sankhu in the Kathmandu Valley. During the month-long festival, one chapter a day from the 31 chapters of the story of Shiva and Swassthani is read as a family. Women especially will fast during this month in order to obtain special blessings for their families.
This sacred tale originated in Nepal and its celebration is very distinct in this country.
