Wireless Network
Science and Technology, We live in the digital age. We are at a stage where most of our daily functions involve the transfer of packets of data in the form of is and so from one place to another.
These
packets were transferred primarily via wires. However, as the world started
getting connected, it was found that wires are not reliable when transmitting
over a huge distance. Similarly, the trans-oceanic transmission was also impossible
at that time. It was then that a method
to transmit data in the form of electromagnetic waves was found. With a
receiver and a transmitter, one could send data from one corner of the world to
the other corner without wires. Since electromagnetic waves travel at the speed
of light, the data transfer is instant. This transmission of data without the
aid of wires is called a wireless network. Wireless is not to be confused with Cordless as cordless means the
use of a device with its own batteries.
Science and Technology, The first use of wireless technology were in 1898 A.D. when Nikola Tesla used a
remote control to control a boat. However, at that time people were not aware
of radio waves and consequently thought Tesla was a magician controlling the
boat with his mind. Ironically, the first massive use of wireless was in the
transmission of enemy movements from behind enemy lines. The message was sent
in the form of radio signals. However, anyone with a receiver could receive
these messages and thus the military came up with its own codes in order to
encrypt them. These Codes are known as Morse Codes.
However,
the wireless sector has developed to such an extent that wireless devices are
now incorporated in almost all stages of our lives. Even when we don’t notice
it, it has made our lives significantly better. Remote controls, Wi-fi, DECT
phones, emails, internet are all types of wireless networks we use daily. We can chat,
we can call and we can video conference with people in another corner of the
world. Wireless has been included in homes, offices, in parks, and even in the very cars, we drive. We have wireless
game controllers that give more mobility to players when playing. Types of wireless network LAN
makes it easier for the transfer of data between computers in the same network.
The
uses of wireless have changed over time and there are signs for some more
changes. Even though there is such a change, the definition of wireless,
transmission of data without the aid of wires, will always remain the same.
